As strong as the Santanas commitment to Tovar, the Santanas have an equally strong commitment to their respective communities in the United States and they have found ways to support these communities in the United States and they have found ways to also support these communities. While a Minnesota Twin, Johan participated in joint fundraising events and community events, including a Charity Bowling Event, a Charity Wines project which created Santana Selects from Longball Cellars, the proceeds from the sale of the wine went to charities in the United States.
In conjunction with his United States Foundation, in May 2010 Johan participated in the BTIG Charity Day. In June 2010, the Foundation held its first fundraiser, a bowling tournament, in New York City. In December 2010, the United States Foundation instituted the “Toys for Tovar” initiative in Venezuela joining the weekend celebration of “El Cyonazo”. During the weekend, thousands of toys were distributed to young boys and girls who reside in and around the region of Tovar, Venezuela.
In January 2011, the United States Foundation made a gift in the amount of $100,000 to the New York University Langone Interdisciplinary Melanoma Cooperative Group (IMCG) to assist them in their ongoing work in the area of Melanoma Research and Treatment. In 2011, the United States Foundation will focus on facilitating the creation and development of the Tovar Sports Complex in Tovar, Venezuela.
